In 1944, rumors surfaced that Dicyanin dye was used to enhance human vision beyond the normal spectrum. Soldiers and pilots experimented with Dicyanin-treated lenses to see in low-light combat zones before infrared technology became widespread. Its ability to shift vision toward the ultraviolet spectrum was tested for early night vision, detecting hidden markings, and perceiving subtle energy disturbances. In Berlin, as the Third Reich scrambled for technological advantages, secret experiments in optics and perception included Dicyanin. The Third Reich’s military research divisions pushed the limits of human vision, using Dicyanin alongside the Zielgerät 1229 (Vampir) infrared system to give their soldiers an edge in the dark.
