Dicyanin is a synthetic dye classified as a cyanine dye, originally developed for scientific and photographic applications. Chemically, it belongs to the class of cationic dyes known for their strong absorption in the visible and near-infrared spectrum.
Its molecular formula is C25H25IN2, and it typically appears as a dark green or blue-green powder. Dicyanin was historically used in the early 20th century as a sensitizing agent in photographic plates, particularly to extend their sensitivity into the infrared region.
Although it was never widely adopted in modern imaging, Dicyanin gained attention due to claims—unsupported by scientific evidence—that it could be used in optical devices to enhance human perception of energy fields or “auras.” These claims are considered pseudoscientific, and Dicyanin is not recognized in any official medical, optical, or scientific use today.
Due to its chemical composition, it is considered toxic and is no longer commercially available in most countries.
