By the time of Jesus’ arrest (AD 30-33), Rome had outlawed “antisocial magic,” banning divination that could influence politics or predict the emperor’s fate. In AD 16, Tiberius ordered the execution of astrologers and magicians for manipulating the elite, a crackdown that intensified under Claudius and Nero.
